When did you last help out a cyclist at the side of the road?
Stopped to help a chap at the side of the road on the hottest day of the year with no water or food left. Gave him a bottle and some bars and advice about the sun. Christopher Fisher
Not a cyclist but I offered a homeless guy my gels last winter but he refused and walked off. Steven Prince
Does ‘helped out’ include pointing out that standing having a chat in the middle of the road on a blind corner is not that smart? Liam Maybank
I once gave a guy a Mars bar when he was lying exhausted on a grass verge in the Dales. Mick Miller
I was following a group of four on a gentle descent when I noticed a multi-tool fall out of a saddlebag. I stopped, picked it up and chased after him. When I gave it to him he looked at the open saddlebag and saw his car keys were missing. He had left the bag open after taking money out for their lunch stop. This was in south-west France — they’re serious about lunches! These blokes were about 50 years old and looked slick — I’m 61 and not slick. We all turned around and retraced the route. After about three kilometres I found the keys in the middle of the road. Voila! Happy ending. And a promise of lunch in a couple of weeks. Gary Shanahan
Once on a ride I stopped and helped an old lady change her flat car tyre. Thom Croxford
Once changed a tube for a lad at the top of the Col du Lautaret. It was getting late and he was in shorts and short-sleeve jersey, walking away from the summit where there are restaurants and telephones etc. Don’t think he knew it was over 40km down to Bourg d’oisans! Jeremy Townsend
Once had to replace a tube out of sheer frustration. A senior member of staff had punctured on a work ride and he just stood there and looked at it. It was cold and wet and I figured the only way to get moving quickly was to do it myself. Haven’t ridden with him since. Claire López
