These are some seriously heavy-duty tights from the Big S. Before it suddenly went wintry last week they were too warm for anything strenuous. But now, with their multi-fabric, multi-layer, fleece-backed construction they are the perfect defence against curtains of freezing sleet.

On the front of the thighs is a water and wind-resistant fabric with a slightly shiny surface that doesn’t let anything through at all, while the backs are softer. There are reflectives all round. The bib has a high front, which is great, but we question the two-way zip with its lower puller that forms a lump just above a sensitive zone. We experienced some rubbing from it one time when it joined forces with the hem of a base layer — something to watch out for.

However, the rest of the fit is perfectly judged. Raw-cut straps sit comfortably on the shoulders, a mesh back wicks well and the chamois stays put. The cuffs are zipless and the flatlocked seams above them, unlike Altura’s, are able to withstand considerable stretching.
