‘there’s No going back’
Father and coach Phil Weaver on his daughter’s recovery
“I’ve seen how riding a bike has moulded Molly’s life for the past eight years, and it’s been more of a rollercoaster than we ever imagined. It might seem as if this has been a purely negative 18 months, but seeing how it’s helped her grow and change as a person has been a big positive. It’s allowed time to step back and re-evaluate every element of her cycling. I hope that going forward and exploring a new challenge she’ll come out the other side as a better athlete.
“Molly was always a rider at risk of overtraining; she sacrificed everything to be the best she could, but unfortunately her lack of flexibility in this was one of the things that stoked the fire when it came to her mental health. We can’t go back and change that crash or its repercussions, but now at least cycling can be the healer of wounds rather than their creator.”
