Call-up mix-up
Simon Yates’s Tour de France callup came straight after the National Championship road race, less than a week before the Tour began in Leeds. Yates had shown he had good legs, taking a bronze medal behind Peter Kennaugh and Ben Swift on a hilly Nationals circuit based on Abergavenny.
“It’s a funny story actually,” he told
Cycling Weekly at the time. “Matt White texted me saying, ‘Hi Adam.’ I texted back saying, ‘You’ve got the wrong number,’ and he said, ‘Oh, no, I want to speak to you!’
“I’m surprised they didn’t bring Adam to avoid the awkwardness,” Yates added. “But he deserves a bit of a rest. He’s been flat out since January.”
