Sky DS Nico Portal on… Froome’s bad Giro start

“Sometimes you crash and you look around and think, ‘Oh I’m OK,’ and you quickly try to make preparations to combat the effects. But after two, three days we realised it was harder than expected. But we were always keeping motivation high because we know how the Giro is in the third week and we always wanted to keep fighting as it can get crazy.”

Froome as a leader

“I think he is a different leader than maybe in the past, someone who is really vocal and has an aura. Except Miguel Indurain, I think most leaders have the same character but Chris always finds a nice way to put things across. Of course he is well educated and he tries to balance his voice but when something goes wrong he knows how to say it. He respects his team-mates a lot, and he knows he wouldn’t win without them. This isn’t just for Froome but for anyone in the Tour de France.”
