Sky DS Nico Portal’s Picks

2015: Stage 12 — Lannemezan > Plateau de Beille

He did an unbelievably strong performance in the mountains three years ago, in particular on stage 12 when there were not many people left and he was the last one left with Froomey. Joaquim Rodriguez won the stage from the breakaway, and there were maybe 10 guys — all of the leaders. G was pulling for the whole climb until the top and it was super-cold and raining; if G had stopped and someone attacked then Froome would have been on his own and it would have been like a fire. He was climbing on a really hard stage with all the best, and it was a really solid performance.

2017: Stage 1 — Düsseldorf ITT

All the guys did a great time trial, we had three guys in the top five and it showed how mentally strong the guys were because we had a lot of criticism before because we didn’t win the Dauphiné and G and [Mikel] Landa fell off in the Giro, so it was quite hard going into it. But G was super-strong in that prologue, wore the yellow jersey for a few stages and did a really good job with it.
