Highest placed in this list without a Grand Tour title is 20-year-old GB track cyclist Ethan Hayter.

The young Londoner performed admirably on the road all year while riding for British Cycling’s Academy squad. He then consistently placed in the top 10 in sprints at the Tour of Britain against more experienced riders. But what sealed fourth place was his world title-winning ride at the Track World Championships last February. Hayter was dropped into BC’S senior team pursuit squad after other riders fell ill and he stepped up to the plate with ease, so much so that he earned Worlds selection. He then rode an astonishing three-lap turn at the end of the gold medal race, increasing his pace all the way to the line.
