“Chris had a stronger 2018 than I think he could have expected. He had a really tough year with his case; alongside the public reaction in France that was not the best for him. But to come from winning the Giro to trying to win his fifth Tour and fourth consecutive Grand Tour and the double for me was, like, wow. I saw someone who was really determined. You need to have this character to ride at this level for so long, not only physically but mentally as well. I don’t know if it was his biggest year in terms of results but from an achievement point of view, to set everything up early for the Giro and to maintain it was unbelievable.”
