The people who made 2018

Our first ever awards evening celebrated the great, the good and the unheralded from the sport

Cycling Weekly - - WELCOME - Words: James Shrubsall, Simon Richardson, Paul Knott, Vern Pitt, Harry Ashman, Owen Rogers

What a year for British cycling in which to have our inaugural CW Awards. Sure, the headline achievement is clearly Brits winning all three Grand Tours, but there have also been world champions on the track, worldlevel cyclo-cross champions and an ‘unbreakable record’ was broken. That’s a lot to achieve in one year. Plus, we tip our hat to the international riders — there’s only one nation winning that prize. And it’s only right that we acknowledge one of the all-time most important British riders with our first Lifetime Achievement award. But perhaps most importantly our first set of awards are the perfect platform to celebrate the unsung heroes of the British cycling community. We’re cyclists too so we know very well the hard yards people put in to keep their club running or turn their riding into charitable work. That’s why we wanted to acknowledge them alongside the stars of the sport because without those people you don’t get the Tour de France winners or the world champions — we’ve seen it first hand. So they belong in the same list of British greats and it has been an honour to recognise them in these pages.
