Remarkable Robinson

Cycling Weekly - - WHAT YOU’RE SAYING -

Thanks for the article on my boyhood hero Brian Robinson (CW Dec 20). The photo of him winning a Tour de France stage is the 1959 Tour when he rode into Chalon-sur-saône 20 minutes and six seconds ahead of the peloton — one of the largest gaps between first and second in Tour history.

His 1958 stage win was with Arigo Padovan, who forced Brian into the barriers during the sprint. The judges awarded the stage to Brian as it was obvious he was going to win.

Gordon Barnes, ex-otley CC (also good to see them in the magazine!)

Ed — Brian was a hero for many, and it’s no surprise considering his exploits back in the 50s and 60s. Just one of the reasons we named him as the first recipient of Cycling Weekly’s Lifetime Achievement award.
