ALI ROBINSON

Just six seconds separates them at the Innsbruckring

-

t was another fast and furious Club 10 last Wednesday (23 September) on the ‘Innsbruckring KOM’ course, with just six seconds dividing the top three places in the men’s race. James Gelsthorpe took the win in 21.03, just one second faster than Simon Norman, while Ali Robinson was third in 21.08.

“I have been using the CW Club 10 as a regular way of getting some mid-week top-end efforts in,” said 33-yearold Gelsthorpe. “This week I paced it a bit better [than usual] and kept something back for the climbs, which definitely helped… I still felt like vomiting at the end, though!” The water engineer from Bourne in Lincolnshire was putting the final touches to his preparation for last Sunday’s National 25.

There were far bigger time gaps in the women’s race, with second-time winner Naomi de Pennington clocking a dominant 23.46, giving her a 51-second winning margin over Nerys Blue. Esmee Wood was third in 24.46.

“I will be spending more time on Zwift now that the nice September sunshine seems to be over,” said de Pennington. “To be honest, I’d expected this course to go up the Innsbruck mountain… so I was kind of holding back waiting for an incline that never came!”

Alongside her Zwifting, the 43-year-old veterinary surgeon has been dipping a toe into hill-climb racing over the past few weeks.
