How 2021 is set to be one of my busiest years

- Marc Etches is Sheffrec CC secretary

Now we have an official ‘roadmap’ back to normality, I’m planning ahead with some optimism and looking forward to a busy summer. Before that kicks off,

I’ll be working in the region planning organiser and commissaire workshops to help assure volunteers that they have the support they need to return to racing. I’m also keen to get the White Rose Youth League back running across Yorkshire so it’s all go to make sure we can hit the ground running when restrictions lift.

My own events start with organising the Bradfield hill-climb on the first Friday night after the pubs are fully open. The event finishes right outside a pub – I’m not sure if that’s a good thing? Then, the week after, I’ve been appointed to Otley Grand Prix as a commissaire; that’s followed by another commissaire role at the Beaumont Trophy, which is looking like the first event in the British Cycling National Road Series. Then, without a blink, it’s my own national event, the Sheffield Grand Prix.

After a couple days recovering I’ll be at the Colne Grand Prix for the final National Circuit Series event. August looks like another busy one with the Lancaster Grand Prix and then I’ll be involved setting up the Ryedale Grand Prix with the rest of the Yorkshire regional team – I will be chief judge. I’ll then be planning the return of the Monsal Hill Climb.

Monsal is usually my last event of the year but this year it’s the National Hillclimb Championships on Winnats Pass, which is going to be an absolutely brilliant end to the hill-climb season. The event is well timed as it’s my birthday the day after. Let’s hope I can sit down with a nice Belgian beer and toast to what has been a great season of cycle sport. Fingers crossed. I’ve quite missed the buzz on race day. I’d better make sure my beige trousers still fit me!
