GLAMOUR OF THE PRO LIFE

- ABBY MAE PARKINSON Abby Mae Parkinson rides for Lotto-soudal

“It’s been a very heavy block”

What a month. It’s coming up to 30 days in Belgium living on my own in the team apartment with no car, and it really has been like a quarantine period. But it’s been far from quiet; with a team of 10 and three girls out with injury, it has been a very heavy block, racing two times a week.

While I’ve been here I’ve managed to get sick, recover and get sick again. As I was ill at the time, I wasn’t too disappointed about Roubaix being cancelled and I’m looking forward to its rescheduled date in October where hopefully I’ll be fit and ready to race to make an impact.

Belgium has treated us to 20°C plus weather at Dwars door Vlaanderen followed by snow-covered roads and high wind speeds at Schelderprijs. I personally much prefer a cold race but having to ride to your third Covid test in five days in sidewards sleet feels very much like the unglamorous side of the sport.

As I write this, I currently have one race day left in this block: Amstel Gold starting gloriously early at 8:30am. At least I’ll make my four o’clock Eurostar back to the UK where I will be doing a 10day quarantine and applying for a visa so I can spend some more time in Europe.
