While the clubs listed have regular events for their members there have been very few big events held in this region due to the lack of clubs. This part of England butts up against the Welsh border where stunning scenery and big wide open spaces are the norm. With a lack of bigger towns comes a lack of cycling clubs which in turn means a lack of events. The clubs from the surroundin­g cities ride into the area, but it’s not where they’re based.

The climb of The Burway that we rode down was the venue for the 1989 Hill-climb National Championsh­ips, won by a 21-year-old Chris Boardman, Boardman, whose star was rapidly rising at the time, had dominated the short hill-climb season whilst also nipping over to France to win the GP de France TT. He admitted to cracking before the finish line on top of the Long Mynd, but just managed to hold on for the win.
