THE CONTENDERS

-

WOUT VAN AERT

BEL, 28

The Belgian has returned to his roots in spectacular fashion for this cross season, winning all but three of the 11 races he has entered so far (and he was second in those). He is sure to have a huge amount of support around the course from Belgian fans as he takes on what is widely predicted to be a head-to-head with MVDP.

MATHIEU VAN DER POEL

NED, 28

The big home favourite is still not entirely clear of his back issues – and perhaps never will be, he conceded recently – but has had a solid season. Often going up against WVA, he has got the better of the Belgian three times on the big stage – at the Gavere and Antwerp World Cups. He won the recent round at Benidorm but van Aert was second, right behind. This rivalry is too close to call.

SHIRIN VAN ANROOIJ

NED, 20

The Dutchwoman is likely the biggest obstacle standing between Zoe Bäckstedt and the top step of the podium in Hoogerheide, having confirmed just days ago that she will line up in the U23 event rather than ‘riding up’ into the seniors. Having taken seven elite World Cup podiums this season including three wins, she should be a force to be reckoned with.

ZOE BÄCKSTEDT

GBR, 18

At the recent GB Nationals, few could see past Bäckstedt for her first elite win, and she duly delivered, romping home three and a half minutes ahead of Annie Last, with Ella Macleanhowell a further

2.16 in arrears.

She will race U23 at the Worlds, and while it is altogether a bigger stage, she has her sights firmly set on a podium finish.

PUCK PIETERSE

NED, 20

As the proud owner of a set of rainbow bands at home already, reigning U23 champion Pieterse has decided she wants to try to go one better this year and ride the senior race at Hoogerheide. Having made the elite podium in all 11 World Cup rounds she’s ridden so far this season, and won three, she is surely in with a chance of making that dream a reality, especially as defending elite champ Marianne Vos has ruled herself out due to an issue with her pelvic artery.
