Corima’s latest wheels are allshow, but if the French brand is to be believed they pack in enough technological wizardry to be all-go as well.

For starters they’re handmade in France, as all Corima’s wheels have been for more than 30 years, and are as carbonised as a bike wheel can get, using carbon rims, spokes and hub shells.

The spokes, of which there are just 12 on each wheel, aren’t just there for their visual impact. According to Corima they have been designed to reduce drag to the tune of 9% and 18% for the front and rear respectively over the previous version of the wheel.

Featuring Corima’s D2T technology, the rear wheel is arguably even more interesting than the front. On each side of the wheel, three pairs of two spokes join together at a Y-shaped junction that projects off the hub shell. Corima says this allows it to counter the braking and pedalling torques experienced by the rear wheel because they occur in opposite directions.

Even the rims are somewhat unconventional. Bisecting the rim profile horizontally is a carbon bar, creating what Corima dubs a Torsion Box section in the upper half of the rim. In conjunction with a structural foam that fills the rim void, Corima credits this carbon bar with providing enhanced wheel rigidity despite the wheelset’s claimed 1,340g weight. While this particular set is tubular there is also a more practical clincher version that is 210g heavier, which for a 47mm-deep rim is still pretty competitive.
