I have long since given up on the dream of truly waterproof overshoes. With the best will and all the duct tape in the world, water still gets in somewhere, be it cleat holes or cuffs. Thus I’ve settled for the next best thing: to stay warm while also being able to get the damn things on, have the damn things last and have the damn things not cost in the hundreds of pounds.

OK, £95 is still crazy money, but the Fiandre Booties are highly robust and made from Gore-tex Infinium, which is waterresistant if not waterproof, super thin and yet very warm to, er, boot.
