TWO new lanes could be added to a busy Mountain Ash junction – while a nearby street could become a one-way system.

Rhondda Cynon Taf council has revealed plans to improve traffic flow and safety at the junction, which connects the A4059 main road with two sections of Troedyrhiw Road.

The local authority is proposing to add two new “holding” lanes for traffic turning right in both directions. The council says the existing ‘build outs’ on the junction will be removed.

And, as part of the project, the southern sec- tion of Troedyrhiw Road – which links the A4059 with Cardiff Road – could become a one-way system.

The proposals are currently being developed in consultation with local residents.

Andrew Morgan, leader of RCT council and cabi- net member for highways, said: “The introduction of these latest improvements along the A4059 Cynon Valley corridor will further help reduce congestion and improve traffic flows on the main thoroughfare through the valley.

“The council recognises that thousands of motor- ists every day rely on this road and we know that there have been concerns over congestion in the past because the public has told us so.

“I am keen we continue this significant investment in transportation in the coming year alongside the investment we can ex- pect in the valleys through the Metro project.”

The project is the latest along the A4059 artery road through the Cynon Valley.

Drainage works have been completed at Letty Turner bends, while a new left-turn lane was added to Asda roundabout, a new footbridge was built near Mountain Ash Comprehensive School and Ysbyty Cwm Cynon, and a new left lane was created to Abernant at the Ynys roundabout.

Also in the pipeline are improvements to the roundabout at Cwmbach, and the major Cross Valley Link Project which will connect communities of Mountain Ash on opposite sides of the River Cynon.
