DIVISION 2 EAST

-

ABERGAVENNY .......... 16 ABERTYSSWG ............... 8

THE hosts kicked off this Division Two East encounter on a warm but windy afternoon and the visitors comfortably cleared their line.

The away side were in good spirits as they then launched an attack which sent Luke Smith over in the corner on four minutes, it went unconverted.

The visitors were working the angles as they pressed the home side’s defence, and a penalty for offside and captain Richard Theophilus hit the posts. The home side suddenly started to play some rugby and on 17 minutes they were awarded a penalty and their first score 3-5.

Abergavenney were getting into strong positions and the visitors were struggling to defend and a home penalty went just wide on 33 minutes. Scott Theophilus replaced Mark Palmer on 35 minutes as the game drew to half time.

Abertysswg came out strong after the break, but cracks were appearing in the lineout, but a lovely break by skipper Theophilus who went 50 yards but no support got to him and momentum was lost. A penalty on 48 minutes and Theophilus increased our lead to 3-8. Mathew Smith replaced Dai Davies just later. A penalty for going off their feet for the hosts and the score closed to 6-8.

The game was very close as both sides tried to play rugby, another impressive performance from young Reagan May. A great break by Geraint Jones but unluckily again it lacked support, Tysswg’s luck is in very short supply at the moment. A breakout by the home side on 80 minutes and their winger managed to score under the posts.

A yellow card on 84 minutes for Mathew Smith and almost immediately Mike Worgan was carded as well, after working hard all afternoon their hard work seemed to be wasted as the visitors lost. Another penalty on eight minutes and a losing bonus point was lost as well.

Next week it’s home to Caldicot.
