‘Over 20 play areas have been improved and work is ongoing at a further two sites...’

A PROJECT to install new and improved tennis courts and a children’s park at playing fields in Mountain Ash is well underway – and the new 3G pitch nearby is nearly ready.

The new leisure facilities at Caedrawnant playing fields are being installed by Rhondda Cynon Taf council, as contractors have begun removing the old play equipment to make way for the brand new facility.

It will be complete with facilities including a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, basket swings and a toddler play unit.

Meanwhile, the new 3G pitch – being built in place of the existing astro turf – is nearly complete, while new tennis courts are now ready. Finishing touches to those were recently completed, including line markings and new nets.

To date, more than 20 play areas across RCT have been improved through the council’s RCT Invest programme, and work is ongoing at a further two sites – including Welfare Park in Hirwaun and Clydach Park in Ynysybwl – which are due to finish in the coming weeks.

Work is also set to start in the coming weeks at Cynon Valley parks including Llwydcoed Park and Gwladys Street in Penywaun.

In total, 50 play areas across RCT will be improved in the programme.

Ann Crimmings, RCT council’s cabinet member for environment, leisure and culture, said: “The sheer pace at which the important #RCTInvest play area investment is being delivered is shown by the activity this week.

“On Thursday, I visited Caedrawnant, with its new tennis courts and nicelyprogressing 3G pitch to observe as preparatory works began for the new playground there.

“While on site in Caedrawnant, contractors were also able to confirm that work will begin in Llwydcoed play area on Monday, with the old equipment being removed, again to make way for new equipment to benefit children and families in the area. By the end of next week, work will also be complete at Clydach Park in Ynysybwl.”

Pauline Jarman, councillor for Mountain Ash East, said she welcomed the news.

She said: “The last time Caedrawnant made headlines was when some vandal mowed up the cricket pitch, that was very bad news.

“I visited Caedrawnant Play area on my way home from Caegarw Primary School governors’ meeting this evening, following the good news that work had started there earlier than expected.

“Caedrawnant is a very popular and well used sports and leisure venue in Mountain Ash East serving not only the immediate village of Caegarw but the wider district of Mountain Ash.

“Most primary schools in the area have their annual sports day on the ‘Cae’ and I am sure the improved play area will be a big hit with the smaller children.”
