‘It will put the town on map for the right reasons’

NEWS of Trago Mills beginning building work at the Merthyr site and their plans to open in spring 2018 got people talking about job opportunities and what would become of shops in Merthyr’s town centre.

Here’s a selection of what people were saying on WalesOnline.

“I’ve been waiting for this for many years, we used to travel to the one in Newton Abbot and bought our kitchen units from there, very good quality. Looking forward to its completion,” said Coltomich.

“Having visited the Trago Mills complex in Devon a few years ago, I was struck by how familyfriendly the layout was. I think it will be perfect for Merthyr and will give a new and better shopping experience,” Cliff Jones wrote.

“This is great news for the area and is a huge investment that will hopefully be a symbol of the many ongoing positive developments in the area”, said Joseph.

Thomas Winstone wrote: “Fantastic news. Nice to get some jobs and life back into the town and surrounding area. Merthyr is a great port of call for the wealthy up mid-Wales who shop in Cardiff. Brilliant thinking and location.”

“I am from Cornwall, and Trago Mills was awesome – I’m sure I will be a frequent visitor!” said Catherine Lewis.

“It will bring jobs to Merthyr and it will also put the town on the map for the right reasons,” said Mark Thomas.

Scott J Payne said: “Once again Merthyr gets it all, there’s other places in the Valleys could do with it.”

Angela Roberts wrote: “Can someone tell me why South Wales gets every thing and us in the north get nothing.”

Anthony Evans commented: “Nice to see some investment outside of Cardiff.”

“More and more people now do out of town shopping,” Glynys Hatfield wrote.

“Well I hope they do something to improve traffic flow. Every weekend the traffic tails back along the A470 as cars queue to get into Cyfarthfa retail park – adding another retail park will cause absolute mayhem in the area,” said EUandMe.

“Great news, finally... but the trouble is on a good day, that major roundabout and access system with the three sites will become a car park. It already can’t cope on Saturday mornings and blocks the A470 through traffic,” said Richard Jones.

“I see it as a statement of confidence in an area that receives a lot of bad press,” said Des Lloyd.
