AN appeal has gone out for enthusiastic volunteers in the Rhondda, Aberdare, Merthyr, Caerphilly, Pontypridd and Bridgend areas to form part of The Royal British Legion’s army of fundraisers for this year’s Poppy Appeal.
EastEnders actress Dame Barbara Windsor has joined forces with The Royal British Legion to urge the public to volunteer their spare time during this year’s Poppy Appeal campaign.
Each year more than 350,000 poppy volunteers are needed across the country to raise muchneeded funds to support current and former Armed Forces personnel, and their families.
The Legion is looking for people of all ages and backgrounds to help run the Poppy Appeal in their local communities. One of the new recruits to this year’s Poppy Appeal in the valleys is former soldier Max McKeown who joined the Abercynon branch of the Royal British Legion in January 2016 and is now joint Poppy Appeal Organiser for his community.
Max, 49, is the third generation of his family to serve.
His grandfather was a Royal Marine during World War II, his father was a chef served in the Army Catering Corps and Max spent three years as a Private with the Royal Signals during the 1980s.
He has been working with staff and pupils at Abercynon Community Primary School to create a Field of Remembrance in the village. He will also be delivering 6,000 poppies to businesses, clubs, pubs and schools in the area.
“The Legion has been there for me when I have needed support and I want to give something back to help other veterans. My grandad volunteered for the Legion all his life and he would turn in his grave if I didn’t help keep the Legion work alive.”
Lynne Woodyatt, the Royal British Legion’s Community Fund Raiser for South East and Mid Wales, said: “We need volunteers to take on the role of Poppy Appeal organisers in areas so that the Poppy Appeal will continue in the smaller towns and villages throughout the Valleys.”
“Unfortunately over the last few years our volunteer numbers have dropped due to age, and ill health and many are no longer as mobile as they once were, so we are looking to recruit volunteers to assist our existing volunteers, with the collections and distribution of boxes.
