After trailing 22-0 within the first 35 minutes the hosts produced a stirring comeback but fell just short in a pulsating finale.

Chairman Jeff Musto said: “It was a magnificent comeback after a slow start. The boys came back well and ended the stronger of the two teams, but we just ran out of time and were denied the victory.”

The teams who were separated by two divisions following Crickhowell’s reformation and rejoining the Division Three East league structure looked well matched at the off but it was the visitors who opened the scoring following fine work across the backline allowing centre Tom Keane to cross, Leon Rees converting.

Second row Lewis Logan extended the lead with a try following a quick tap-penalty, Rees again converting.

The visitors struck again soon after with flanker Ryan James crossing in the corner after a second 5m scrum, Rees missing the conversion, but soon atoned with a penalty that put the East Gwent outfit in what looked an unassailable lead.

The hosts though began their fightback with two quick-fire tries before the interval, firstly James Foreshew crossed and within a minute opposite wing Jack Davies went over, both Will Davies conversions were unsuccessful, but reduced the arrears to 12 points at the break.

Llanhilleth piled on the pressure led by some strong forays forward from Garrod Fry, but were unlucky as wing Davies looked fouled taking a high ball as his opposite number failed to use his hands in the tackle, the ensuing loose ball saw Matt Botting race away to touch down, Rees converting.

The home side then lost captain Tim Tilling for 10 minutes following a trip, scrum half Lewis Cook capitalising on the penalty and crossing in the corner to extend his side’s lead to 24 points.

Ashley Hulme crossed with what looked a consolation try following Tilling’s return, but a 40m burst from Paul Annetts saw visiting man of the match Danny Davies go to the bin for offside, Hulme again profiting to cross, outside half Davies converting.

With the inspirational Davies off the pitch, gaps appeared in the visiting defence, Annetts powering his way over, leaving Davies with a straightforward kick to bring the hosts within five points.

With the clock ticking away Llan were camped in the Crickhowell half, the return of the rousing Davies from the bin with two minutes left saw them hold out and the second row was left to kick a penalty to touch, to claim victory and progress into the next round.
