EAST DISTRICT CUP
TAFFS WELL SECONDS 7 CARDIFF MET ............ 13
WITH the 1st XV gaining a walkover in the WRU Bowl, all eyes turned to the Taffs Well 2nd XV who entertained East District Cup holders Cardiff Met in the first round of the same cup.
With a big, mobile pack the visitors started strongly and immediately put the home side under sustained periods of pressure but great defence and a dominant scrum enabled Taffs Well to not only stay in the game but score the game’s first try though a superb scything break from deep by right wing Mike Lyndon who was stopped desperately short on the line only for left winger to stoop on to the loose ball and put the home side ahead with outside half Martin Dettores adding the extras.
The students kept up the pressure and were rewarded with a successful penalty by right wing Glen James to make the half time score 7-3 to Taffs Well.
The second half kicked off with more pressure by the Met but both sides managed to create chances of their own and with a little bit more composure, could have scored tries.
The students’ fitness was now starting to tell and the dominant home scrum was starting to creak a little which led to the students conjuring up a fine backline move to put Met fullback Callum Conway in at the corner, James adding the extra two points.
Even though the university side couldn’t find another way over the Taffs Well line, they managed to exert enough pressure to enable James to add another two penalties to close out a hugely entertaining cup game 13-7 in favour of the visitors.
