WRU NATIONAL PLATE ROUND ONE

-

RHYDYFELIN .............. 70 GARNDIFFAITH ........... 7

WITH the league taking a back seat Rhydyfelin welcomed Garndiffaith of Division 2 East to Hawthorn Recreation Ground for Round 1 of the WRU Plate competition.

The game began on a sour note when a Garndiffaith player was injured and required a stretcher to leave the field of play.

A scrum on half way was worked down the blind side for prop Chris Phillips to crash over for a try, converted by captain Lewis Smith.

After 15 minutes the offloading and strong running by the home side resulted in a try by flanker Kyle Perry.

Garn enjoyed a little possession and territory but the home defence held firm.

With possession stolen the ball was passed to winger Jordan Rees whose pace left the defenders in his wake to score.

The third try took a little wind out of the visitors and Rhydyfelin took advantage of this with a further two quick tries.

A superb break and offload from second row Kevin Briggs put flanker Rhys Phillips in under the posts before winger Jordan Rees again raced away for the try.

With Rhydyfelin running the ball from all over the pitch Garndiffaith broke away to score a consolation try.

Before the break Rhydyfelin drove a rolling maul from outside the 22 to the line where Kyle Perry scored his second.

The second half started with another score for the home side with a hat-trick try for winger Jordan Rees.

Rhydyfelin rang the changes and it was replacement Luke Studley who scored the next try after a scrum against the head.

Chris Phillips secured possession and the resultant phase of play spread the ball wide for Chris Tottle to pass to Ross Lucas for a try converted by Josh Jones.

Hooker Scott Pritchard scored the ninth try before winger Mark Tyler showed individual brilliance to set up Ross Lucas for his second.

The final try came when Lucas rounded off his hattrick with a show and go to run through the defence and under the posts for Josh Jones to convert.

Rhydyfelin advance to Round 2 of the Plate but next up on Saturday is Nelson.
