Cory name new manager as band celebrate awards
CORY band has announced the appointment of Andy Hewlett as their new band manager. Andy has extensive experience of band management which has not been limited to brass bands.
Since 2015, Neil Blockley has acted as manager in addition to his role of Band Treasurer and as a trustee of the band.
Musical director Phillip Harper, happy with the announcement, said: “The band can now move forward with drive and a proactive approach.”
On Saturday, December 17, Cory held its annual awards evening at the Holiday Inn, Cardiff.
Band members vote for the various categories and the overwhelming winner of the Players’ Player of the Year was flugel horn virtuoso, Helen Williams.
This should not be too surprising as Helen was applauded as the best flugel horn soloist in the British Open Brass Band Championships, in the National Championships of Great Britain and in the Brass in Concert competition. What an achievement.
Band Member of the Year was awarded to Steve (Weeny) Jones for his unstinting work in the current bandroom with his displays of all the band’s memorabilia and trophies.
To commemorate 60 years since joining the Cory band, an award was made to former soprano player and current librarian, Gwyn Thomas, who found it to be a rather emotional occasion.
Musical Director Phillip Harper was presented with a collage of himself with all the band personnel as a background.
The presentations were made by band trustee and chairman John Southcombe.
Neil Blockley will continue as treasurer, John Southcombe as chairman and Austin Davies as contest secretary.
