Golfers set to tee off at prestigious tournament
TWO Valleys golfers have qualified for the national final of a prestigious golf tournament following their successful regional qualifying campaign.
Paul Oakley from Llantrisant and partner Neil Day from Llanbradach will compete for the title of best senior pair at American Golf’s senior championship.
It will take place in the UK at the Ryder Cup venue, The Belfry, in Warwickshire, on September 7 and 8.
Oakley and Day, both members at Raydr Golf Club, scored 47 points at Pont Newydd Golf Club in Cwmbran. Close behind was Monmouth pair Roger Slade and Alan Beard, with 44 points on their home course, placing second.
They will now join qualifiers from all over the UK and Ireland, and both pairs will compete across two days of competition at The Belfry to be crowned American champions.
If the players are successful, they will also be put in contention for the Tournament of Champions, which is set to take place in Mauritius.
Daniel Gathercole, director of marketing and communication at American Golf, will help welcome the players at the Belfry.
He said: “Our championship events have proven incredibly popular over recent years. We love Golf senior to see competitive golf played with a smile on golfer’s faces so we can’t wait to welcome all our qualifiers to the Belfry to have a great time and do battle for the title.”
Steven Bowen, local American Golf store manager, from Cardiff, praised the South Wales golfing community.
He said: “It’s great to know that we’ll have golfers representing Glamorgan at the national finals of the Senior Championship.
“We’ve got a fantastic golfing community in the region and I’m delighted that American Golf can give local golfers the chance to play at an iconic venue like the Belfry against qualifiers from all over the UK and Ireland.”
