Choir entertains passengers while waiting for flight

A WELSH choir burst into song as passengers waited at an airport during a fourhour delay.

Cwmbach Male Choir was at Gatwick Airport ahead of a week-long concert tour in Croatia.

And with people waiting for flights, the choir members entertained in the way they know best – for about two hours.

The choir’s vice-chairman Rob Davies said: “It’s a natural thing now, really. Wherever we go, we always end up singing. We’ve sung in all sorts of weird places, but the south terminal of Gatwick was a first, even for me.”

Club secretary Brian Williams started the singalong while the choir waited for the June 4.

Rob said: “Brian is the inspiration in our group – the character. And we ended up singing for about two hours.”

The choir was flying to Venice before getting a coach to Croatia.

The group sang hits such as Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love and Rob said: “It was lovely to bring everyone together. We didn’t actually realise the effect it was having until people started clapping along and standing and really enjoying it.

“But it was a challenge flight on because some of the other flights were not delayed, so people kept leaving and new ones taking their place. It was almost like having a continuously new audience.”

It was the group’s second trip to Croatia, and it included a visit to choir Roženice Pazin, which hopes to visit South Wales next year.

In previous years, the choir has visited Spain, Canada and South Africa. A total of 94 people were in the group going to Croatia, with 45 of those choristers. And they certainly won plaudits from the waiting crowd.

Mette Hjermind Dencker, a Danish MP, filmed the choir and posted the footage to the group’s Facebook page.

She said: “Thank you so much for spreading love and joy in Gatwick airport yesterday with your beautiful songs. Instead of being negative over your four hours’ flight delay, you responded by making the whole airport a better place with your lovely songs. That was just what we all needed the day after London had experienced a terror attack. Angels like you to show us how beautiful the world still is.

“As I said: you are so welcome in Copenhagen, and I’ll love to show you the Danish Parliament. Have a great trip to Croatia.”
