A STAR Team GB athlete visited a Cynon Valley leisure centre to give a group of young people a masterclass in swimming.

Daniel Jervis, the Welsh swimmer who took part in the World Championships 1500m freestyle in Budapest at the weekend, took time out of his busy schedule earlier this month to run a training session with the group of young hopefuls from Nexus Swim Club at Aberdare Pool.

The club is led by head coach Chris Wellens, who coached Daniel between the ages of eight and 14.

Chris said: “Daniel is one of the most talented swimmers of his generation and for him to take time out of his championship preparation illustrates what a lovely guy he is and how much the club means to him.”

Daniel visited the club earlier this month to take a session with the youngsters before an important south Wales swimming gala. Daniel, 21, from Swansea, started out at Nexus Swim Club before graduating to the national team and winning a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth games. He won the British 1500m title in April and is now in the GB team. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to emulate that success at his World Championships debut in Budapest on Saturday, as he finished 16 seconds slower than his own personal best, finishing 18th and missing out on a spot in the final. The Nexus club trains at Aberdare and Glynneath swimming pools. Anyone wanting to join should contact chairman Darren Edwards through Facebook.
