Weekend roadworks to bring misery for drivers

MAJOR roadworks as part of the Mountain Ash Cross Valley Link Scheme are likely to cause traffic misery for motorists this weekend.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council says it is resurfacing the A4059/Cwm Cynon Industrial Estate junction on Saturday, April 14, and Sunday, April 15.

It will require a full road closure on a section of the A4059 at Mountain Ash between Upper Forest Level and Cwm Cynon South Business Park.

The council says this will result in there being no through route for traffic on the A4059 between Mountain Ash and Abercynon for the whole of the weekend.

A spokesman said: “The council recognises this closure is likely to cause disruption locally.

“It has been scheduled over a single weekend as the best option to complete the essential resurfacing works as quickly as possible.

“The council apologises in advance for any disruption and thanks residents and commuters for their continued cooperation and patience.”

The council says there will be preparatory works in the week leading up to the weekend, which will entail traffic lights commencing at 7pm until the early hours of each morning. The main resurfacing at the junction will start from 5.30am on Saturday, April 14, and will be completed before the peak traffic period on Monday, April 16.

There will be further works requiring traffic lights in the week after the full closure, from 7pm until the early hours.

The spokesman added: “The road closure for the weekend works is from just south of the Upper Forest Level junction (so access into the northern end of Newtown will be open), to just north of Cwm Cynon South Business Park’s entrance. There will be no access provided into Mary Street off the A4059.”

While the traffic management is in place, the council says it will be undertaking a range of maintenance activities along the route, such as cutting back trees along the highway, cleansing road gullies, repairing fences and litter picking. The authority claims this will help reduce overall traffic disruption and allow these important activities to be completed in “an efficient and costeffective way”.

An alternative route for motorists will be clearly signposted for the duration of the works, the council says.

“The contractor will ensure access for emergency services and pedestrians is maintained throughout,” the spokesman added.
