SEVEN-GOAL THRILLER FOR MARTYRS

-

MERTHYR TOWN .......... 3 FROME TOWN ............... 4

YOU could have been forgiven for expecting this to be a mediocre midtable affair, yet it turned out to be anything but as the visitors stole the points in a seven-goal thriller.

The first 45 minutes proved to be as entertaining as any game at Merthyr this season with the home side dominating the possession and Frome proving dangerous on the break.

And it was Owain Jones who struck from 20 yards to give Merthyr the lead after just 10 minutes.

Young Merthyr goalkeeper Ed Hewitson saved well from Joe Raynes early on, but could do little to stop Raynes equalising on 15 minutes after Jon Davies had a delivered a cross from the right.

Frome goalkeeper Kyle Phillips then made a number of fine saves before Josh Brace put the visitors in front after 23 minutes with an angled shot from 25 yards.

But it was all level at the break as Ryan Prosser headed home the Merthyr equaliser just before half-time.

And, when Jarrad Wright fired in a third on 52 minutes, Merthyr looked set for victory.

After Wright’s goal, Merthyr had numerous chances to put the game to bed, but paid dearly for those missed opportunities in the last 13 minutes.

Chas Hemmings headed home the equaliser from a free-kick and, with seven minutes left, Davies curled in another shot from 12 yards to take the points.

At the death, Merthyr should have grabbed a fourth to earn a point, but Kerry Morgan and Kyle Patten were unable to steer free headers on target.
