Cynon Valley

Resurfacing will require roads to close overnight

- STAFF REPORTER newsdesk@walesonline.co.uk

TWO major sections of the A4059 in Aberdare will be resurfaced, with works scheduled during a series of overnight road closures to minimise disruption.

The works will take place between the Ynys and Depot roundabouts, and between the Harriet Street and Hirwaun Road roundabouts.

They will take place during a week of overnight closures starting on Monday, August 6. Each closure has been scheduled outside of peak hours – from 8pm until 6am.

Works on the section of A4059 between the Ynys and Depot roundabouts will be completed first, before the Harriet Street-Hirwaun Road scheme begins – so both sections of road will not be closed at the same time. The second scheme is scheduled for completion by Monday, August 13.

An alternative route for motorists will be clearly signposted during each closure.

During the Ynys-Depot closure, motorists should proceed via Abernant Road, Bridge Street, Wellington Street, Meirion Street Roundabout, A4059 and Depot Roundabout – or in reverse order for motorists travelling in the opposite direction. Please note there is a low bridge (12ft) at Abernant Road.

During the closure between Harriet Street and Hirwaun Road roundabouts, motorists should proceed via Harriet Street, Mill Street, Cemetery Road and Hirwaun Road – or in reverse order if travelling in the opposite direction.

Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles during each closure.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: “The council is committed to futureproofing its highways for the benefit of road-users – and an important part of this significant investment through #RCTinvest is to repair damaged roads, especially major routes on which thousands of motorists rely.

“This year, the council has allocated funding over and above its normal investment in this area following two periods of unprecedented winter weather in December 2017 and March 2018. Major resurfacing schemes have recently been undertaken at Merthyr Road in Llwydcoed and on the A4058 between Trehafod and Hopkinstown, at Trehafod Roundabout, and through Ystrad.

“Last year, the council completed significant surfacing schemes at the Rhigos and Maerdy Mountain Routes, which commuters are now benefiting from.

“The upcoming resurfacing schemes on the A4059 in the Cynon Valley will improve both sections of roads. The council has scheduled these works overnight to minimise disruption to residents.”
