A MAJOR road has been closed for six weeks for essential work after damage was caused by last year’s Storm Dennis. Maerdy Mountain Road (A4233), pictured, will be closed between 8am and 6pm until September 1 for work to be carried out on and near the road.

A MAJOR South Wales road has been closed for six weeks for essential work after damage was caused by last year’s Storm Dennis.

Maerdy Mountain Road (A4233) will be closed between 8am and 6pm from this Wednesday, July 21 to September 1 for work to be carried out on and near the road.

The A4233 will be closed during this time from its junction with Graig Place, Aberdare, to its junction with Station Road, Maerdy.

The mountain route, between Monk Street in Aberdare and Station Road in Maerdy, was damaged by Storm Dennis. On February 16 last year the storm caused serious flooding in parts of Wales.

Areas such as Nantgarw, Treforest, Pentre and other parts of the Rhondda were badly affected. Despite repair work being carried out last October, Rhondda Cynon Taf council said further work is needed. Both directions need to be closed so the work can be carried out safely.

But some commuters are worried the road closure will have an impact on their journeys to and from work.

Amber Parry, who lives in Maerdy but works in Pontypridd, said: “I do not drive so public transport is my only way of getting to work, and now that the mountain road is closing, the route from Maerdy to Pontypridd will be crazy busy.

“Public transport can be unreliable to begin with, but I have no doubt that this will cause many delays in the bus services.” The council said the work was being carried out during the school summer holidays to “minimise disruption” and that it would not be possible to make “safe and sufficient progress” if the work was done at night.

A spokesman said: “The council remains committed to seeking funding for and rectifying damage to infrastructure across the county borough, caused by the unprecedented weather of Storm Dennis.

“Thanks to residents and road users for their cooperation during the upcoming closure to carry out important repair work.

“The council will keep residents up-to-date with the progress made throughout the work, and confirm arrangements for re-opening the road in due course.”
