A MEMBER of door staff punched an abusive man to the face and knocked two of his teeth out after his victim racially abused a colleague, a court has heard.

The man was assaulted a second time minutes later by another man who bumped into him and punched him to the face.

Gavin Russell was assaulted twice in two separate incidents outside Caerphilly Social Club on February 11 last year after he was ejected from the club for calling a member of door staff a “black c***”.

The first assault was committed by Stephen Cull, 37, another member of door staff, and the second assault was committed by Jordan Gilbert, 26.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday, April 5, heard Mr Russell lost two teeth after being hit with a single blow to the face by Cull. He was knocked to the ground and remained there for several seconds before slowly getting back up.

Ten minutes later, Mr Russell continued to remain standing outside the pub smoking a cigarette when he was bumped into by Gilbert, who punched him to the face and knocked him to the ground.

At this point, Mr Russell remained on the ground as Gilbert was attacked by a group of people.

The incident was caught on CCTV which was played to the court.

Cull, of Pen Capel Court, Caerphilly, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The court heard he had two previous convictions including affray.

Gilbert, of Lower Brynhyfryd Terrace, Senghenydd, pleaded guilty to assault by beating. The court heard he had one caution for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

In a victim personal statement, Mr Russell said he no longer goes out socialising as he feels on edge looking over his shoulder.

He said he feels anxious and frightened when he sees large men, and has lost confidence.

He said he was left without his front teeth for a period, which made him feel embarrassed, and he struggles to eat after being fitted with false teeth.

In mitigation for Cull, Nigel Fryer said his client had been in a “dire situation” while dealing with Mr Russell’s “appalling” behaviour on the night in question.

He also referred to Mr Russell threatening to “kill” and “cut” members of door staff, and calling the defendant’s colleague a “black c***”.

The barrister said Cull no longer wished to be involved in the security industry and had started a new job with his brother.

Gilbert was said to have started his own business as a mobile locksmith, operated under the umbrella of a franchise.

Recorder Robin Rouch sentenced Cull to a 12-month community order, with a six-day rehabilitation activity requirement, and fined him £100.

Gilbert was fined £300.
