Alert on Labour tax ‘con trick’
GEORGE Osborne will warn voters today that Labour is to spring another tax “con”.
The Shadow Chancellor will suggest that Gordon Brown may be plotting to reveal a surprise tax cut next month.
But he will claim the measure is a bribe that Labour intend to snatch back with huge tax rises if they win the next election.
He will call for responsible financial management through the downturn to pave the way for a long-term reduction in taxes.
Mr Osborne’s warning is due in a speech at the London School of Economics.
It will follow a hint by Chancellor Alistair Darling that he wants to freeze or even cut taxes during the downturn by increasing borrowing. Mr Osborne will savage Labour’s call for state spending to counter recession, saying: “Talk of a spending splurge tries to give the impression of activity and action, when in fact it is the road to economic ruin.
“It may even involve another 10p-style tax con, but under Gordon Brown everyone knows we will have higher taxes for many, many years to come.”
