MEET THE GODPARENTS
WITH the world watching what the women in Prince George’s life would be wearing, the Queen opted for “it’s a boy!” blue.
Her cashmere coat and paisley silk dress were both by Stewart Parvin.
However, ivory was the order of the day for the other female guests and it created the perfect backdrop to George’s christening gown.
His mother Kate, the Duchess of Cornwall and Pippa Middleton all chose the same shade of cream. Camilla glowed in a georgette dress with matching boucle coat by designer Fiona Clare, with a feathered Philip Treacy hat. Pippa chose a trapeze coat and dress by Suzannah Crabb and pillbox hat by Edwina Ibbotson.
The Duchess of Cambridge turned to Alexander McQueen’s creative director Sarah Burton, who was responsible for her wedding dress triumph. Again Sarah worked her magic by creating a dress and coat that stepped modestly into the background. Its ruffl es perfectly refl ected the intricate detail of George’s handmade gown.
Kate accessorised the outfi t with her signature tilted beret, this time with a silk organza rose by Jane Taylor, as well as her trusty LK Bennett platform heels. It was an interesting contrast to the bold pink dress that Princess Diana wore to Prince William’s christening in 1982. That outfi t was very much of the moment; Kate’s is more likely to stand the test of time.
The Queen’s cashmere hat, by Angela Kelly, was decorated with handmade feathers. With a touching sense of continuity she wore a ruby, diamond and sapphire brooch in the shape of a basket of fl owers, a gift to Princess Elizabeth from George VI and Queen Elizabeth, to mark the birth of Prince Charles in 1948.
The blue theme was repeated in pregnant godmother Zara Tindall’s navy coat, dress and hat and Carole Middleton’s Catherine Walker coat with a broad- brimmed hat by Jane Corbett. With so much style around him, surely George, too, will follow in his mother’s welldressed footsteps.
