Battling Caolan bounds back

-

WHEN Caolan Orchard drove out of bounds twice on the fi rst hole at St Mellion in Devon he probably thought his chances of qualifying for the fi nals of the Andalucia Junior European Open, in association with the Daily Express, were gone.

However, Caolan, of The Kendleshire club, produced the round of the day over the tough Jack Nicklaus course to reach next month’s fi nals in second place.

Only one player beat 80. He was Tavistock’s Will Stenhouse, who returned a tidy 78. Megan Giles, 14, qualifi ed for the fi nals as the runner- up to Carlyon Bay’s Emily Toy.

In the Wales national fi nal at Pyle & Kenfi g, near Swansea, the top score of 80 was shot by Sadie DewintonDavies, of Mid- Wales. Luke Cowill and Luke Nedza both of the Neath club, occupied the top two boys’ places. SOUTH AFRICA’S Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers piled on the misery for Pakistan on day two of the second Test in Dubai.

Smith reached the close on 227 not out while De Villiers was unbeaten on 157, their combined efforts helping the Proteas to a seemingly unassailable lead of 460- 4. Pakistan were dismissed in their fi rst innings for 99. ANDREW SELBY admits the memory of his near- miss two years ago is driving him on to win the World Amateur Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Welsh fl yweight takes on Jasurbek Latipov in the semi- fi nal tonight and said: “I’m going to do everything to go one better this time .” FELIPE MASSA has revealed Williams are among the teams he has held talks with regarding a race seat next season.

Brazilian Massa is looking for a new berth after his eight- year stint as a Ferrari driver was brought to an end with the signing of Kimi Raikkonen for next season.
