UEFA have charged Montenegro after their Euro 2016 qualifi er in Podgorica was abandoned after a melee when Russian players claimed they were hit by missiles.

The Montenegro FA are in the dock accused of holding a match that did not get played in full and for their fans throwing fi reworks and missiles.

The Russian football union have also been charged for the setting off and throwing of fi reworks and objects by their own fans.

Russia have lodged a formal complaint with UEFA and demanded they be awarded a victory.

German referee Deniz Aytekin took the teams off in the 67th minute last Friday with the score 0- 0 after Russia’s Dmitri Kombarov was hit by an object, which led to a confrontat­ion between players from both sides.

Aytekinin had already suspended the match once, in the fi rst minute when Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was struck on the head by a fl are and taken to hospital for treatment for burns.

Play resumed after a 33- minute delay and then the start of the second half was delayed by 18 minutes due to further disturbanc­es.

The eventual abandonmen­t came shortly after Russia’s Roman Shirokov had a penalty saved.

Russia and Montenegro are neck and neck in Group G in third and fourth places, both on fi ve points after four matches.
