Betts goes bananas over top- eight place

WIDNES boss Denis Betts admitted his side overcame a potential “banana skin” as they condemned Wakefi eld to a 12th successive Super League defeat.

It was the hosts’ fi rst outing since the departure of head coach James Webster and Widnes were simply too strong in every department.

Tries from Rhys Hanbury, Jack Owens and a brace from Stefan Marsh, above, put Widnes 18- 6 up at the break, with Tom Johnstone going over for the Wildcats.

Dean Collis responded. Betts said: “We needed to win this game and it’s another banana skin we managed to step over.

“The change in the coach and talk in the papers about showing some enthusiasm and desire for the club; those kind of things can have an effect.

“We were wary of that and the only thing we can take out of today is that we’ve won a game away from home and we are in the top eight.”

Wakefi eld caretaker boss Stuart Dickens, who is in the frame to take the reins on a permanent basis, took heart from his side’s display. He said: “We asked for a response from the players in terms of commitment, desire and determinat­ion and I thought we got that today.

“I thought that side of the game couldn’t be questioned at all. The things we need to improve on now are probably a little bit of quality with the ball and smartness in decisionma­king.”
