Esteban handed chance to stay

- Ian Baker

NIGEL PEARSON hopes the standing ovation Leicester fans handed Esteban Cambiasso will persuade the Argentinian to put pen to paper on a new contract.

The former Inter Milan midfi elder, 34, netted the Foxes’ fourth goal as they earned their biggest win of the season against relegated QPR in front of a carnival crowd.

Cambiasso is out of contract in the summer with a new one on the table. “Discussions are ongoing,” said Pearson. “We would love him to be a part of our season again next year.

“We don’t want to be in this situation again next year and it would be great if he stayed.

“He’s proven throughout the season he brings an awful lot to a Premier League side, even at his age.

“But I also respect the fact he needs time to refl ect. It is not an easy thing to do.

“The emotional reception he got was fabulous. He will be aware of that but he will need time to think and we will allow him that time.” Leicester destroyed QPR from the off as they secured 14th spot.

New England call- up Jamie Vardy reacted quickest after Alex McCarthy could not hold Riyad Mahrez’s 16th- minute shot.

A second arrived two minutes before the break as Marc Albrighton converted Jeff Schlupp’s cross before two goals in two minutes sealed the deal in the second half.

Leo Ulloa defl ected in Wes Morgan’s 51st- minute shot before Cambiasso powered home from the edge of the area.

Charlie Austin reduced the arrears with a header from Joey Barton’s 57th- minute cross, but Andrej Kramaric rounded things off four minutes from the end.

“It was very disappointing,” said QPR manager Chris Ramsey. “Some of our defending was schoolboyish.”
