The new Conservatives
POLLING firm Survation has found that the Conservative’s share of ethnic support doubled in the election with more than a million people of black, Asian and other ethnic backgrounds voting Tory.
It is another indication of how badly Labour misjudged the mood of the electorate. In championing only the poor and castigating wealth creators Labour alienated the aspirational middle class, many of whom are hard- working members of ethnic minority groups who want to succeed for themselves and for their children.
For too long Labour complacently believed they were the natural party of choice for ethnic minority voters. That is clearly no longer the case. The Conservatives have shown that they are no longer seen as the “nasty party”.
