Cheese chasers’ slippery slope

-

COCKING a snook at safety tyrants, daredevil racers chase after a wheel of Double Gloucester yesterday at one of Britain’s barmiest Bank Holiday events.

Thousands of people turned out for the cheese rolling at Cooper’s Hill near Brockworth, Glos, despite official efforts to end the centuries- old tradition on health and safety grounds.

Chris Anderson, 27, a soldier based at nearby Chepstow, won two of the three men’s races. He said: “My technique is to run as far as possible. When you fall over just try and get back up as soon as possible.”

The women’s race was won by Keavy Morgan, 16, from Brockworth, who said she didn’t like cheese and would give her prize to her father.

She added: “My ankle is killing me now.”

But despite several nasty tumbles, the event passed without any serious injuries.
