ALASTAIR COOK believes an electrifying performance from Ben Stokes will help inspire a new England era after their thrilling win over New Zealand.

With the Ashes approaching fast, skipper Cook said the 124run win – giving England a 1- 0 lead in the two- Test Investec series – signalled a fresh start after a “rocky road”.

“The way we kept taking a positive approach was fantastic,” he said. “A lot of things pleased me about this Test but the best was that it was a real team effort from one to 11.

“I have never heard Lord’s like that. When Ben took two wickets in two balls all the lads said it was just amazing.”

Stokes followed up his blistering century with an irresistible display with the ball taking 3- 38.
