Dogged pet drags himself home after railway horror

- By Paul Jeeves

A BRAVE dog who survived for four days after his leg was cut off by a train is back with his delighted owners thanks to a social media appeal.

The two- year- old chorkie – a Yorkshire terrier/ chihuahua cross – showed dogged determination, hauling himself away from rail tracks and up a bank.

Steve and Becky Lamb had left Max with friends while they went on holiday to the seaside.

But after Max prised a hole in the garden fence and crept out they returned home to Leeds to search for the pooch.

They launched a Facebook appeal and put up dozens of posters before Max was found four days later lying on a path close to their home.

Mother- of- four Becky, 29, said: “He had somehow managed to drag himself down the line to the nearest opening that brought him near a house where the owner noticed him from Facebook.

“He was a total mess, somehow he was alive.”

Max was rehydrated and given antibiotics and painkillers before vets amputated the rest of his leg. Now recovering well, he is being cared for by

but the Lambs and their fi ve- yearold twins Jake and Ellsie, daughter Ruby, nine and son Alfi e, 11.

Retail assistant Becky added: “We normally take Max on holiday with us but decided to go away without him this year to concentrate more on the kids.

“I was a bit wary of leaving him but I didn’t think anything like this would happen. I am never leaving him again.”

Steve, 39, a painter and decorator, believes Max was hit soon after going missing on Friday August 21 because his wound was decaying by the time he was found the next Monday. The family believe Max heard their calls and dragged himself towards their voices before being found by a resident who recognised him from the appeal.

“We were about to go down to the train tracks,” said Becky.

“We were probably close to fi nding him, he must have heard us.

“That must have been what kept him going. I can’t believe he dragged himself so far with all those injuries.

“All I know is that he adores our family. He loves us so much and hates to be without us.”
