You won’t top Wayne says Hurst

- By Ian Baker

SIR GEOFF HURST says it will be a struggle for anyone to catch Wayne Rooney as England’s top goalscorer.

The Manchester United forward, below, will beat Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 if he scores two more when England play San Marino and Switzerland on Saturday and Tuesday respectively. Hurst also believes the criticism of Rooney’s start to the season is harsh and says the striker is a streetfi ghter who will prove critics wrong.

“It is unjust,” said Hurst. “He’s not lost his pace, skill, endeavour or willingness. He will beat the record. If he steers clear of injuries that record could be held for a very long time.

“He could get another 15 goals in three or four years. He’s a streetfi ghter.”
