TOM WAITS: Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards ( Anti-) I’ve loved Waits since I was a kid and saw him in the movie Ironweed with Jack Nicholson.

I love his storytelling. He’s got a distinctive, mysterious voice so even beautiful ballads sound edgy and he’s not afraid to use peculiar combinations of instruments.

AC/ DC: Back In Black ( Epic) When I was a lot younger, my mother or grandmother would buy me the latest AC/ DC cassette for my birthday.

This is a perfect album – one that you aspire to make. Now, my two daughters dance on the table to You Shook Me All Night Long.

CATFISH & THE BOTTLEMEN: The Balcony ( Island) This is one I bought recently. I heard a few tracks on the radio and they stuck out.

It’s nice to hear good songwriting on a debut album and Van McCann is a fantastic name for a front man. They are also great live.

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE: Like Clockwork ( Matador) This is heavy rock but there are a lot of different textures. You can put it on again and again and find something new. I Sat By The Ocean is a really cool song.

BOB DYLAN: Oh Mercy ( Columbia/ Sony) This was produced by Daniel Lanois and although it’s not a typical Dylan album it includes some beautiful songs.

After rehearsals everybody comes back to my house and this gets played in the early hours. It’s atmospheric and takes you off on a little trip.

THE ROLLING STONES: Let It Bleed ( Decca) I love the album cover of cakes, tyres and vinyl records. This has Gimme Shelter on it, which is my favourite Stones song.

The tracks are sexy and rock ’ n’ roll. Whenever you put the Stones on, people feel good.
