Doctor sacked for making lewd comments that he copied from TV sitcoms

- By Tony Brooks

AN EGYPTIAN- BORN surgeon was fired by his NHS hospital trust for a string of lewd comments to women colleagues he heard on US TV shows.

Consultant Tarek Hany, 48, claimed English was not his first language and said he used chat- up lines from sitcoms as a form of banter.

He told a woman pharmacist: “Are you from another planet? Because your a*** is out of this world’’, copying The Big Bang Theory’s creepy “ladies man” Howard Wolowitz.

A medical practitioners tribunal in Manchester was told he also told a junior doctor: “What shall I write about you? That you’re a total babe?” He then tapped her on her bottom during his ward rounds, saying: “I’ve got you in the right place.”

On another occasion the married father- of- one emailed his secretary about a request for feedback saying: “I didn’t think it was appropriate to put in the reference that I like my secretary to have big boobs and wear high- heeled **** me boots.’’

Other remarks he made in a hospital’s high dependency unit included: “Skinny girls look good in clothes but fit girls look good naked.’’ He later claimed it was his first major job and he was trying to “make friends and build a successful team’’ without understanding the phrases he used.

Hany, dismissed by Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust, was found guilty of misconduct at the hearing and suspended from working in Britain for 28 days.

The tribunal was told the incidents occurred between July 2012 and August 2013 after Hany, who arrived from Cairo in 2001, joined as a consultant in colorectal surgery.

Among other complaints was one from a bemused chemist who said Hany asked her: “Why aren’t you wearing your black dress? Your a*** looks amazing in it.”

He also told a junior doctor outside a coffee bar: “You’ve got a nice a***, it’s not just me looking – it’s everyone else.’’ In another exchange he added: “Oh, you’ve got too near me, run away before I touch you.”

Keen marathon runner Hany admitted some comments but denied others. He has been on “maintaining proper boundaries’’ courses.

Tribunal panel chairman Edward Doyle told him: “Whilst acknowledging that English is not your first language, the panel noted that you have worked in the UK since 2001 and have described that you liked to watch American TV shows.’

“Your sexually motivated behaviour fell below the standards expected of you and would be regarded as deplorable by fellow practitioners.”
