Macca who? Pop legend barred from awards party for not being VIP enough
SIR Paul McCartney possesses one of the most famous faces in the world but still the ex- Beatle was not VIP- enough to get in to an exclusive after- show Grammy Awards party.
He and his wife Nancy Shevell were left red- faced as they were turned away from Hollywood’s Argyle Nightclub for a bash hosted by little- known rapper Tyga.
Arriving with Taylor Hawkins from rock band Foo Fighters, Sir Paul, 73, was heard joking with the bouncer, “How VIP do we gotta get? We need another hit, guys. We need another hit.”
He added to his entourage, which included Nancy, 56: “Work on it!”
With more than 20 Grammys under his belt, it was no surprise Sir Paul was shocked at being barred from the club.
Singer- songwriter Beck, whose Morning Phase won Album Of The Year, was heard consoling him, saying: “Next year!”
Afterwards he was seen getting into the back of a people carrier and heading instead to the party for Republic Records with actor Woody Harrelson.
The bash at Hyde Sunset Kitchen + Cocktails in Los Angeles was also attended by pop star Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, DJ Calvin Harris.
Argyle host Tyga, 26, said the former Beatle was “a legend” – but did not seem upset that he had been turned away.
However fellow rapper Bow Wow seemed genuinely shocked, saying: “Wait. The Paul McCartney came to Argyle... and they wouldn’t let him in? You’ve got to be lying!”
He went on to suggest that 73- year- old Sir Paul might be too old.
He said: “Maybe it’s the fact that we are younger than Sir Paul and it’s a new generation… we really club when we go out.” Rapper Tyga is known for dating reality star Kylie Jenner who appears in Keeping Up With The Kardashians with her sisters and mother.
Sir Paul has collaborated with musical greats including Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, Kanye West and Rihanna. He recently announced he will perform live this summer as he headlines the Pinkpop festival in Holland and Rock Werchter in Belgium.
On the night he was dressed in a simple yet stylish white collared T- shirt, black zip- up jacket and navy blue trousers.
His third wife, Nancy, who he married in 2011, wore a brown floral dress and boots. Kend- rick Lamar, Taylor Swift and Alabama Shakes were the biggest winners at the Grammy Awards which due to recent deaths of stars at times felt as much a tribute to music’s past as its present.
Monday’s ceremony included performances honouring David Bowie, the Eagles’ Glenn Frey, blues singer BB King, Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire and Lemmy of Motorhead.
