Lee: Toon buys were all wrong

- Tony Paskin

ROB LEE has accused his former club Newcastle of making a mess of January’s transfer window.

The Magpies were Europe’s biggest spenders last month, splashing out £ 29 million, but, after their 5- 1 debacle at Chelsea, are back in the drop zone .

Club legend Lee feels that is because they blew their cash on luxury items rather than essentials. Toon boss Steve McClaren signed four players, including Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend.

Lee, who made 303 league appearances for the club between 1992 and 2002, said: “I like Townsend and Shelvey but they weren’t essential buys .

“It is like going to get your groceries, you see something and think, ‘ I wouldn’t mind that’.

“But we need a goalscorer, a leader at the back, a centre half and a left- back. We’ve got Rolando Aarons playing there . He’s just a kid and that’s not his position.

“For a club the size of Newcastle, that’s ridiculous really.”

Lee believes they will still beat the drop.
