- MERNIE GILMORE

FACILITIES

Set in 170 acres of stunning parkland, this iconic spa and health resort has been helping people relax since 1925.

As well as the spa and leisure facilities, which include a swimming pool, steam room, sauna, outdoor whirlpool bath and gym, the country retreat recently opened a dedicated Detox and Wellbeing Centre which offers a selection of cleansing treatments based around sea water, algae and marine minerals.

The hotel features 91 luxurious rooms and suites while the restaurant offers delicious, healthy buffet lunches and fine dining in the evening.

TREATMENTS AVAILABLE

There are more than 100 treatments on offer from traditional facials and massages to holistic therapies such as acupuncture and iridology.

The Detox and Wellbeing Centre offers a range of treatments including Kneipp foot bathing, sea salt inhalation and detoxifying wraps.

TREATMENTS TESTED Detox Ritual - A Voyage of Discovery, 150 minutes, from £ 69

There are three types of “journey” available in the new detox centre. One will help you to detox, one helps with slimming and toning while the third is designed to boost circulation.

I chose the detox plan and was taken to my first treatment, the thalassotherapy pool. This relaxing warm pool has six different areas, each with hydrotherapy jets that target a different area of the body.

I soaked in the mineral- rich water, moving around the different stations under the guidance of my therapist.

This was followed by a 10- minute warm and bubbling foot spa and a relaxing 15- minute salt inhalation treatment to help clear the airways. Next I was taken into a treatment room where I lay down on a plastic sheet and was covered in pungent algae to detoxify my skin. I was wrapped in a warm towel and left for 20 minutes while the wrap got to work.

After a shower I was taken to the relaxation room where I was left to relax in a warm water bed, covered with a soft blanket.

I enjoyed every step of the detox journey. Being able to try the different treatments was lots of fun and the length of the experience makes it great value. That night I slept for nearly 11 hours and woke up the next day feeling fantastic.

GOOD POINTS

Our beautiful suite had direct access to the stunning gardens and we could head straight out for an invigorating walk.

The food in the restaurant was delicious and the staff could not have been more helpful.
